ITALY’S GREEN HEART
– Umbria

Friday 07 April 2017
for 7 days

We had the most wonderful time in Umbria, staying at the independent 4* De Duchi Hotel in Spoleto we could not have asked for more! The weather was just perfect, with clear blue skies and warm sunshine every day. We even managed to savour the Italian atmosphere on the sun terrace for a Prosecco, or two, each evening after returning from our tours.
Umbria has its own Italian character and identity. Known as the “Green Heart” due to its lush rolling hills and fertile plains, studded with picturesque towns and monasteries, it is less well known than neighbouring Tuscany but still as has a deep heritage, inimitable art and architecture and fine cuisine.
This is a region of historic and modern central Italy. It is the only Italian region having neither a coastline nor a border with other countries. It includes the Lake Trasimeno, Cascata delle Marmore, and is crossed by the River Tiber. The regional capital is Perugia. Known for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy, and influence on culture, it is a region of historic and modern Italy.

We discovered hidden, unspoilt gems like the ancient towns of Orvieto with its dramatic Duomo striped in white travertine and greenish-black basalt, the spectacular Tivoli Gardens near Rome and the beautiful Lakes Bolsena. Our tour also leads us to Assisi, one of the best preserved medieval centres in the world and the birthplace of Saint Francis.

The historic town of Orvieto sits astride a volcanic plug of rock above fields streaked with vines, olive and cypress trees. History hangs over the cobbled lanes, medieval piazzas and churches of this beautiful city with one of the highlights being the Gothic cathedral with its layers of exquisite detail and the impressive cycle of frescoes by Signorelli. There will be a guided tour of the city including entrance into the Cathedral as well as a visit to ‘Orvieto Underground’.

4* Hotel Dei Duchi, Spoleto
We would not hesitate in recommending this superb, typically Italia, nfamily-run  hotel which is ideally located in the centre of the lovely medieval town of Spoleto. The hotel overlooks the Saint Agata valley and is situated right next to the Old City gate. Each of the 49 rooms offers a lovely view either over the picturesque Umbrian hills and valleys, or the spectacular Roman Theatre. The ensuite rooms are equipped with mini-bar, AC, TV, hairdryer and toiletries furnished with care and personal attention to detail . The hotel offers a really friendly welcome, a peaceful atmosphere and delicious local cuisine. The staff are very friendly, very efficient and very smartly dressed! You will not be disappointed.  Website: https://hoteldeiduchi.com/en/

NB. Our next Italian tour is in May 2018, to the culinary region of Emilia Romagna, where we will experience how to cook the Italian way – GOURMET ITALY!
