By Agatha Christie

Thursday 26 September 2019

After many very successful visits to the Mill at Sonning for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskervilles, two Agatha Christie thrillers, Spiders Web & The Unexpected Guest and Gaslight by Patrick Hamilton, you now have the chance to dine and re-visit this beautiful mill at Sonning with Solent Events for another Brian Blessed production of Agatha Christie’s TOWARDS ZERO.

Summer is that time when the inimitable Brian Blessed visits Sonning to direct one of Agatha Christie’s classic thrillers!

The combination of Christie & Blessed has proved a winning formula for The Mill, helped by the special relationship that Brian had with the Queen of Crime. They met and worked together when he was a young actor at Nottingham Repertory Theatre. Their friendly conversations indicated to Brian how she would have liked to see her plays directed. She told Brian that Towards Zero was acclaimed by the novelist Robert Graves as by far her best and most dramatic novel, and in 1956, Gerald Verner adapted it into a play.
Christie explains in her own words the meaning of the intriguing title:

“When you read the account of a murder, real or imagined, you usually begin with the murder itself,” said the big Inspector Battle. “That’s all wrong. The murder belongs a long time beforehand. A murder is the culmination of a lot of different circumstances all converging at a given time at a given point. It’s Zero Hour.”

Five puzzled faces turned to him. There had been a murder – a brutal murder – of an invalid matriarch as she lay in bed. There had apparently been no premeditation on the part of her family and friends who had gathered at her home for their regular yearly visit. No one seemed to have had any reason for killing her, nor did anyone gain by her death.

Inspector Battle paused. “It’s Zero Hour now,” he snapped.

What then happens brings about the conclusion of the most amazing detective story of Agatha Christie’s many mysteries. Full of suspense, brooding atmosphere and outrageous twists and turns.

All tickets include a delicious two-course meal in the restaurant before the show.

The mill was empty until 1977. It was then that Tim and Eileen Richards, who had a great love of theatre, found the derelict building and decided to convert it into The Sonning Mill as it is today. The transformation took four years to complete, with the Mill at Sonning Dinner Theatre opening on 22 July 1982. Definitely worth a visit – we LOVE it!

Please join us for yet another hassle-free evening of relaxation. Dinner, murder, mystery & thrills are also included!

AND, you might even spot the neighbours – George & Alana Clooney! I did!

But be quick – they always sell out fast. In fact, they may have sold out by the time you read this!!

What Our Customers Are Saying

Don’t just take it from us, let our customers do the talking!

We so enjoyed ourselves on Tuesday Lin, and it was a “mystery” right up until 3pm – well done. I’m so glad I found Solent Events. It’s so much more fun going with other like-minded people & takes the responsibility out of driving.
