AFTER THE RESTRAINTS OF MONTHS INDOORS, LET’S STEP INTO AUTUMN AND THE NEW SEASON – IN THE NEW FOREST …….. and if we have inclement weather on the day – we’ll go somewhere warm & dry too!
Walking through Exbury gardens is a wonderful experience at any time of year, but with the warm summer days disappearing, Autumn becomes a very special time before winter sets in with its fresh, crisp air and a feeling of freedom – even if just for a few hours! Lose yourself in the wonder of nature and explore the numerous pathways to who knows where ….
The most obvious sign of the onset of winter around the garden and in the surrounding forest is the autumn colour. The process of complex chemical changes that occur within all deciduous trees is still not completely understood, but miraculously, plants sense the onset of winter and stop production of chlorophyll (the green pigment in leaves). The effort of photosynthesising is no longer worth the diminishing returns! Other pigments disappear within the foliage, creating the wonderful, colourful effect we all love.
Why not take the Steam Train for a leisurely tour around the gardens, but make sure you book a time to save disappointment during this time of restricted passenger numbers. SEE NOTE below.
You will see a superb collection of Acers, over 450 at the last count. As these and many other trees begin the annual process of changing colour, the atmosphere in the garden is transformed.
You will also have the opportunity to view a stunning collection of sparkling Nerine sarniensis ‘Jewel Lilies’ whilst you are exploring Exbury Gardens.
Originally found on Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town in South Africa, Jewel Lilies flower in a spectrum of colours from their original oranges, scarlet and white through new purples, pinks, mauves, reds, scarlets, copper and bronzes. They scintillate in the sunshine with gold or silver crystalline flecks that make their petals sparkle.
Exbury Director, Nicholas de Rothschild has produced over 100 new hybrids, and welcomes visitors to view these stunning plants in this exclusive exhibition.
Nerines will also be available to purchase.
