THE VERY BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE MEXICO – in a small friendly group of like-minded people!
It’s not ALL palm-fringed beaches, chili-spiced cuisine, steamy jungles, teeming cities and fiesta fireworks, but Mexico does conjure up diverse vivid dreams, so dream with us! Be in awe at the great archaeological monuments; Teotihuacán’s towering pyramids; the exquisite Maya temples of Palenque set in a stunning rainforest and of course one of the highlights of our tour, Chichén Itzá – an archaeological wonder which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Before leaving Mexico, relax for 3 wonderful days on the beautiful Caribbean coast.
The Spanish colonial era left beautiful towns full of tree-shaded plazas and richly sculpted stone churches and mansions, while modern Mexico has seen a surge of great art from the likes of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Top-class museums and galleries document the country’s fascinating history and its endless creative verve. Popular culture is just as vibrant, from the underground dance clubs and street art of Mexico City to the wonderful handicrafts of the indigenous population.
Of course, at the heart of our Mexican experience will be the Mexican people. A super-diverse race, from Mexico City hipsters to the shy indigenous villagers of Chiapas, they’re renowned for their love of color and frequent fiestas, but they are also philosophical, to whom timetables are less important than simpatía (empathy). You’ll rarely find Mexicans less than courteous. They’re more often positively charming, and know how to please their guests. They might not be well-governed, but they’re fiercely proud of Mexico, their one-of-a-kind homeland with all its variety, tight-knit family networks, beautiful-ugly cities, deep-rooted traditions and agave-based liquors.
Mexico’s gastronomic repertoire is as diverse as the country’s people and topography. Dining out is an endless adventure, whether you’re sampling simple regional dishes, or trying the complex, artsy concoctions of world-class chefs in Mexico City. Some of Mexico’s best eating is had at simple seafront palapa (thatched-roof shack) restaurants, serving achingly fresh fish and seafood, and the humble taquerías, ubiquitous all over Mexico, where tortillas are stuffed with a variety of fillings and slathered with homemade salsas. Delicious!

Right there lies the Square of the Three Cultures, where the pre-Hispanic, colonial and present of Mexico get together. After visiting Tlatelolco we continue our tour to the ancient Teotihuacan that appears to have gone into decline in the sixth century but its influence on later civilizations such as the Aztecs cannot be doubted. A professional guide will accompany us on a journey through the history of this mystical place along the Avenue of the Dead towards the imposing 2,000-year-old Pyramid of the Sun, the third largest in the world, and be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of this once vast city. Interestingly, San Juan Chamula enjoys a unique autonomous status within Mexico, which has kept the village authentic. At the church of San Juan Chamula we will witness healing rituals and prayers carried out in Tzotzil, the community’s native language. In the impressive Temple of Inscriptions, which reaches almost 23 meters high, the tomb of the Maya ruler was found and excavated in the early 1950s. Palenque was a sprawling city-state that spanned nearly 60 square kilometers but archaeologists estimate that they have excavated only 5-10% of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. So far, more than 200 structures have been unearthed, with the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace, the Temple of the Count and the Temple of the Cross, the most prominent. Afterwards we head to Campeche with an en route stop for lunch (included) before we arrive at Campeche for check in at the hotel. Dinner tonight is at leisure.

Then we will continue on to visit Uxmal, where we will receive a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which rises above the canopy of the jungle. Unlike other Mayan cities, Uxmal was devoured by the rainforest after the Spaniards had arrived. The most famous structure is the 35-metre-tall Pyramid of the Magician, which towers over the remarkably well-preserved Nunnery Quadrangle with its ornately carved interior and exterior walls. Across the central plaza, just beyond the ballgame court, is the Governor’s Palace with its elaborately decorated roof. At the southern end of the main complex is the Great Pyramid, of which only one side has been excavated with the other three still unclaimed from the bush. Lunch is included in a local restaurant near Uxmal. The Mayas founded Izamal as the kingdom of the Itzaes, creating a sacred city and sanctuary in the Yucatan Peninsula. Admire the great Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua, the most important reminder of the Spanish Conquest and domination of the New World and the initiation of the Maya to Catholicism. Afterwards we continue to enjoy a refreshing visit to Cenote Ik-kil where you will have free time and lunch (included) at the site. Finally, we will continue Chichen Itza to check in at our hotel. Dinner at leisure.
Sunday 15 November Chichen Itza Sunrise B, D 5* Now Jade Riviera Hotel Resort
Day 10 – Perhaps one of the most magical moments you can experience in Mexico is viewing the sunrise over Chichen Itza. Today we make an early start at 06:00 hrs in this enigmatic location, one of the most important archaeological sites of the Maya. On arrival to the site, observe the quiet surroundings, as we arrive before the grounds are open to the general public. The legendary Maya city of Chichen Itza has been laboriously reclaimed from the jungle – learn about the Maya and their civilization as we admire the scale and detail of this ancient city. Behold the geometric perfection of the 25-metre-tall Temple of Kukulkan, popularly known as El Castillo (‘the Castle’), which was built both as a representation of the mystical Maya calendar and to reflect the optical illusion of a serpent snaking its way up or down the pyramid during the spring and autumn equinoxes. Admire the Great Ball Court, the largest of 13 discovered at the site, see the haunting Skull Platform, where the heads of human sacrifice victims and prisoners of war were impaled, and also the Sacred Cenote, where sacrifice victims were dumped. Also extremely well-preserved are the Temple of the Warriors, the Ossuary, the Nunnery and adjacent Church, and the large observatory known as the Snail. After our visit we return to the hotel for breakfast and check out.
We continue our way east to the colonial town of Valladolid, one of Mexico’s ‘magical towns’, which was founded in 1543, It was one of the pre-Hispanic sites in Yucatan where the Catholic religion was founded, such as the convent of San Bernardino de Siena. Admire the mesmerizing architecture during a walking tour through the main square, the market and Cathedral of San Servacio.
