TRANSYLVANIA, in central Romania is dramatic, exciting and mysterious! A rural, Romanian tapestry of verdant vales and cultural treasures. Woven into the popular imagination by Bram Stoker and his tales of Dracula, there is much more to this region than mythic vampires. It will feel like you’ve gone back 100 years, where horse-drawn carts rumble in one of Eastern Europe’s most captivating regions, whilst you’ll be right up to date in the beautiful cities of Bucharest and Brasov.

During this fantastic 8-day inclusive tour, we’ll peel back the layers of culture and history to learn that there’s so much more to Romania than the mysterious Gothic stories and tales! We’ll also be seeing BROWN BEARS at the Libearty Sanctuary, Zarnesti – a wonderful 5* welfare facility for these former captive bears!

Transylvania is known for its medieval towns, spectacular mountainous borders and romantic, dramatic castles. Bran Castle, famously known as Dracula’s Castle, is a Gothic fortress associated with numerous legend throughout the ages.  The unique city of Brașov features Saxon walls & bastions, an expansive Council Square, ringed by colorful baroque buildings and most famously, the towering Gothic Black Church.

The rolling hills and rugged landscapes will captivate the senses; the vibrant cities and charming towns frozen in time will mesmerise you and the thrilling castles and dazzling monasteries will enthrall you. 

During our fully-escorted two-centre Romanian tour, we stay in two beautiful 4*+ Romanian hotels – 2-nights in central Bucharest and 4-nights in Brasov.

The Europa Royale Bucharest Hotel is set in a 19th century building, located in the Old Historical Centre of Bucharest, one of the oldest streets in the city. The Aro Palace Hotel in Brasov is right by the central park and very close to all the main attractions in the old town.

We discover all the highlights of the region, including Peles Castle, Sighisoara and the village of Malancrav. We taste traditional brandies and enjoy typical Romanian cuisine in a variety of restaurants. We also explore the famed ‘Dracula’s’ castle.

Vampires, charming medieval villages stood still in time, magnificent castles and beautiful mountain landscapes will quickly capture your imagination, so this promises to be one of the our most memorable of our tours to Europe, so please join us!

Itinerary 
The exact order of the  excursions stated below is provisional and will be stated in your Travel Pack, to be received 8-10-days before departure. 

Day 1
Wednesday 20 September 2023 
0430/0500
   Travel to a London airport by Luxury coach from four local pick-ups and relax in an airport lounge before our direct BA scheduled flight to Bucharest at 0955. Arriving at 1515 local time, a large comfortable coach and guide, Andra, will be waiting for us when we land to transfer to the beautiful Europa Royal Hotel in central Bucharest (approx 35mins). Free time to explore or relax.

Day 2
Thursday 21 September 
Today we enjoy a tour of Bucharest. Truly a city of contrasts, Romania’s capital is vibrant, fun and cosmopolitan. It is also a place of incredible architectural diversity, where Orthodox churches and elegant belle-époque buildings rub shoulders with severe Stalinist constructions and the scars of brutal communist rule. We visit Bucharest’s most iconic building, the vast and vainglorious Palace of Parliament.

Day 3
Friday 22 September 

Today we check out of our hotel in Bucharest and transfer to Brasov. En route, we visit the famous Peles Castle. Peleș Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains, near Sinaia, situated on an existing medieval route linking Transylvania and Wallachia. It was the first European castle to have electricity and even has its own power plant. The Castle has hot and cold running water plus a central heat and vacuum system. The stain glass roof of the foyer opens mechanically and there is a small elevator for the royal family.

Day 4
Saturday 23 September 
Full day excursion with the morning in Brasov with  a guided city tour including a visit to the famous Black Church. In the afternoon we visit Prejmer which will include a visit to the awe-inspiring Prejmer Lutheran  Fortified Church, one of 25 UNESCO sites in Romania.

Day 5
Sunday 24 September 
No visit to Transylvania would be complete without seeing the Brown bears! We have a morning visit to the Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti followed by a visit to Bran Castle. Libearty Bear Sanctuary is the biggest brown bear sanctuary from Europe and has the largest surface in the world. 75 bears find themselves in a lovely home in this 5* welfare facility. Happy bears now living in their natural environment, after bad lives in circuses and zoo cages. The tours are guided by trained animal welfare experts and the visitors can see brown bears really close. Romania is home to 60% of Europe’s brown bears, with 200,000 brown bears in the world, approximately 6,000 of them roam Romania’s forests in the Carpathian Mountains – the largest population of bears in Europe.

Day 6
Monday 25 September
Today’s excursion is to Sighisoara for a city tour – the village where time stood still!  We will also enjoy an authentic local experience with an included lunch.

Day 7
Tuesday 26 September
This morning we visit  Sibiu for a walking tour, before returning to Brasov in the afternoon for time at leisure.

Day 8
Wednesday 27 September

After breakfast in the hotel, we will check out and return to Bucharest by coach for our 1605 BA direct flight back to London.
Arrive London Heathrow at 1735 local time

Breakfast in the two hotels) plus a 3-course Dinner each evening and one authentic open-fire cooked lunch, whilst touring in Brasov is included.
Other lunches to  be taken at leisure  – a great time to mix with the locals and sample typical homemade local cuisine.

During our wonderful two-centre tour, we will stay in two impressive hotels: 

4* Europa Royal, Bucharest
Located in a 19th-century building in the very heart of Bucharest’s centre on the edge of the Old Town. Located by Unirii Square, the hotel is reachable in a 5-minute walk from the centre of Bucharest and is close to the National Museum of Romanian History. The frescoed neoclassical Romanian Athenaeum Concert Hall lies 20 minutes’ walk away.

All 92 rooms exude a classic, elegant look that compliment the 19th-century landmark building, yet modern enough in keeping with contemporary times. Black and white checkered bathroom tiles and brown hardwood floors are some of the distinct touches that makes these rooms inviting and full of character. The double bed is very comfortable and the desk comes in handy for business travellers. Some rooms face the stylish interior lobby, an atrium filled with natural light, while others boast unrivaled views of the historical sites of the Old Princely Court or Hanu’ lui Manuc (Manuc’s Inn). .

4* Aro Palace Hotel, Brasov 
Overlooking the Tampa Mountain and the medieval historic quarter of Brasov, the traditional Hotel Aro Palace combines tradition and modern luxury. This traditional hotel is located in the direct vicinity of Nicolae Titulescu Park.  The pretty market square, Piața Sfatului, with its many cafés and the famous Black Church is just a few minutes’ walk away. In addition to numerous historic buildings, the city is rich in culture and is a popular starting point for going skiing in the winter.
