 Do YOU love a mystery?

May 2015
– Bibery, Broadway, Cheltenham/Toddington with Meg Rivers Lunch & Steam Train journey with Cream Tea
May 2016 – Following in the footsteps of the Downton Abbey locations with Oxford river boat cruise, Carvery Lunch & Afternoon Tea

Jun 2017 – South Downs, North Downs, Steyning, Shipley Windmill & church, Bramber and the Sussex Prairie Secret Gardens – with breakfast treats, morning coffee, 2-course carvery lunch & afternoon tea at the Secret Garden!

Someone fixed some beautiful weather for us once again this year – that’s THREE years in a row! Surprise after surprise emerged as we toured the South and North Downs, Sussex with beautiful blue skies and bright sunshine. The perfect weather to see the English countryside at its very best. Our fantastic Coliseum coach driver, Gareth, did a wonderful job of driving us through tiny country lanes and small picturesque villages, that were definitely not built with coaches in mind!

Our first stop of the day was in the picturesque village of Steyning for morning coffee – at an old coaching inn, The Chequers.
Many of the ‘Where are we Going’ competition guesses were definitely not in the right direction or were hundreds of miles away! With our fantastic Blue Badge guide on board, the day ahead panned out with intrigue and wonder with regular and Privilege Club Member, Hilary Westbrook of Fareham, winning the £25 voucher & bottle of wine prize for her ‘nearest guess’ of the South Downs & Arundel. Well done Hilary – you must know how I think!

A narrow country lane beckoned for our first stop to view Shipley Windmill and also the large, old, Norman church of St Mary the Virgin. It was also a lovely surprise to meet the Rev Patricia Sinton who made time to tell us about the history of the church and invited us to sit where our Queen Elizabeth and Queen Beatrice of Holland sat for various services.
Our tour then took us the quaint village of Bramber where we enjoyed a delicious carvery lunch, with coffee in the garden.
The final and purely delightful part of our Mystery Tour took us to a real ‘secret’ garden – the Sussex Prairie Garden near Henfield.
This lovingly designed and tended garden (by Pauline & husband Paul), features a huge variety of ornamental grasses, layers of colour, texture and architectural splendour. It is surrounded by mature oak trees with views of Chanctonbury Ring and the South Downs. We walked leisurely amongst the borders designed in semi circles diotted with naturalistic lily ponds and pools. With bullreeds on one side, they are a magnet to all types of wildlife including bees, butterflys, hedgehogs, and toads.
Amazingly, the plants and their seeds are left for the birds until the end of February, when the borders are then set on fire for the growing process to start all over again.
A homemade Afternoon Tea under parasols, overlooking this magical garden was the perfect end to a perfect day! Not forgetting the wine and nibbles on the way home that is!

What Our Customers Are Saying

Don’t just take it from us, let our customers do the talking!

We so enjoyed ourselves on Tuesday Lin, and it was a “mystery” right up until 3pm – well done. I’m so glad I found Solent Events. It’s so much more fun going with other like-minded people & takes the responsibility out of driving.
