The Christmas Markets in Vienna are some of the very best in Europe, but unfortunately we were unable to visit them in 2020 due to the pandemic, but now we are able to go in 2021 – the same dates too, which is great news for everyone!
The unique backdrop gives this market a charm of its own, and the delicious aromas are sure to lull all visitors into the seasonal joy. Just magical! The Viennese Dream Christmas Market in front of the City Hall (Rathaus) is an unforgettable highlight of a trip to Vienna at Christmas time.
Vienna offers imperial elegance and baroque beauty as the backdrop to its festive celebrations and bustling Christmas markets. You could do what the Viennese do and head to a traditional coffee house to warm up and sip a hot, milky mélange coffee.
We will now be staying at the ultra modern Intercity Hotel Wien, a lovely 4-star hotel centrally located on the exciting Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna’s premier shopping street and placing us in the heart of Vienna, in the Neubau district of the city, convenient to Stadthalle and the Museumsquartier where the best Christmas markets can be found …. AND if you love shoes, you’re going to love the big, stylish Delka shoe shop right next door and shopping in the elegant international stores selling clothing, music and a plethora of other commodities in the pedestrianised street, right on our doorstep!
This excellent hotel is also literally only steps away from the Westbahnhof (Western Train Station), the U3/U6 underground lines and many tram/bus lines.
The IntercityHotel Wien is completely non-smoking throughout and has a dynamically fresh, young team to help make this luxury accommodation the ideal choice for business and weekend trips, offering Free WiFi, a terrace, restaurant and lounge/bar.
Being within easy access of Vienna’s show stopping sights means you will have the opportunity to marvel at the Baroque beauty of the Schönbrunn Palace, the fabulous Vienna State Opera House and get caught up in the vibrant CHristmas Markets. Explore the Hofburg Palace, Michaelerplatz Square and Belvedere Museum, before returning to dine a one of the many restaurants and eateries surrounding the hotel, or stay where you are to soak up the Christmas Market dining atmosphere.
Of course Vienna becomes even more magical during the Christmas season, when festive markets line the city’s squares with stalls of food, hot drinks, and artisanal gifts. The markets normally open from around mid-November until 01 January.
We also have the chance to visit the famous Spanish Riding School – during the morning of our last day in Vienna. You can pre-book an inclusive visit with Solent Events (see booking form) or of course you are welcome to book with the venue yourself if you wish.
Unfortunately our tour does not coincide with a ‘show performance’ of these beautiful horses, but we will still have the opportunity to view these world-famous Lipizzans (white stallions) during their training before we leave Vienna with a training session and a guided tour in the unique, baroque Winter Riding School at Hofburg Palace, built under Charles VI.
Morning Exercise & Guided Tour (pre-bookable with Solent Events)
ENTRY + GUIDED TOUR – Approx £28 senior; £36 adult (TBC)
1000 – 1100 seats for morning training and then a 1 hr guided tour from 1200 – 1300
Morning Training The daily training for the high school. The morning exercise offers an insight into the training of the riders and their Lipizzans. You can watch the training of both the often grey young stallions and the fully-trained School stallions – white stars” – in the beautiful setting of the Winter Riding School, accompanied by classical Viennese music.
The morning exercise includes relaxation exercises, the refining and perfecting of lessons and the targeted strengthening of muscles.
In order to protect the horses, the famous School Jumps, which are shown during the
performances, are not practised on a daily basis and are only occasionally seen during the morning exercise.
Guided Tour: We’ll take a look behind the scenes, with an exclusive tour of the Spanish Riding School. We will visit the unique baroque Winter Riding School, the Summer Riding School, with one of the world’s largest oval horse walkers, and also the stables of the Lipizzan stallions, which have been housed in one of Vienna’s most prominent Renaissance buildings, the Stallburg, for more than 450 years. You will see the various locations that make up the special charm of this historic institution and you will learn the history, the equestrian traditions and all about the stars – the Lipizzan stallions!
For your comfort, a max number of 25 passengers will apply to this exclusive Solent Events Short Break (the maximum for most tour companies is more often than not, 49!).
