The Christmas Markets in Vienna are some of the very best in Europe, but unfortunately we were unable to visit them in 2020 due to the pandemic, but now we are able to go in 2021 – the same dates too, which is great news for everyone!
The unique backdrop gives this market a charm of its own, and the delicious aromas are sure to lull all visitors into the seasonal joy. Just magical! The Viennese Dream Christmas Market in front of the City Hall (Rathaus) is an unforgettable highlight of a trip to Vienna at Christmas time.
Vienna offers imperial elegance and baroque beauty as the backdrop to its festive celebrations and bustling Christmas markets. You could do what the Viennese do and head to a traditional coffee house to warm up and sip a hot, milky mélange coffee.
We will now be staying at the ultra modern Intercity Hotel Wien, a lovely 4-star hotel centrally located on the exciting Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna’s premier shopping street and placing us in the heart of Vienna, in the Neubau district of the city, convenient to Stadthalle and the Museumsquartier where the best Christmas markets can be found …. AND if you love shoes, you’re going to love the big, stylish Delka shoe shop right next door and shopping in the elegant international stores selling clothing, music and a plethora of other commodities in the pedestrianised street, right on our doorstep!
This excellent hotel is also literally only steps away from the Westbahnhof (Western Train Station), the U3/U6 underground lines and many tram/bus lines.
The IntercityHotel Wien is completely non-smoking throughout and has a dynamically fresh, young team to help make this luxury accommodation the ideal choice for business and weekend trips, offering Free WiFi, a terrace, restaurant and lounge/bar.
Being within easy access of Vienna’s show stopping sights means you will have the opportunity to marvel at the Baroque beauty of the Schönbrunn Palace, the fabulous Vienna State Opera House and get caught up in the vibrant Christmas Markets. Explore the Hofburg Palace, Michaelerplatz Square and Belvedere Museum, before returning to dine a one of the many restaurants and eateries surrounding the hotel, or stay where you are to soak up the Christmas Market dining atmosphere.
Of course Vienna becomes even more magical during the Christmas season, when festive markets line the city’s squares with stalls of food, hot drinks, and artisanal gifts. The markets normally open from around mid-November until 01 January.
We were hoping to have the chance to visit the famous Spanish Riding School – during the morning of our last day in Vienna, but unfortunately, they have a Private Event taking place between the 27 November and 02 December, meaning that it will be closed to the public.
Although we will be unable to see any training or take part in a guided tour, you will be able to see the baroque Winter Riding School at the Hofburg Palace during your sight-seeing.
For your comfort, a max number of 25 passengers will apply to this exclusive Solent Events Short Break (the maximum for most tour companies is more often than not, 49!).
Solent Events will take care of all your travel needs, from start to finish. All YOU have to do is pack! We will also guide and help you if any Covid tests are required. As we had to arrange these in September for our cruise in Portugal, we realise that the paperwork required can be very daunting!

PROPOSED CONCERT ITINERARY:
Monday 28 November at 8:30pm
VIP Concert Tickets with seats in the front section
Please join us for the incredible Vienna Residence Orchestra at the spectacular Palais Auersperg, just 12 minutes away from our hotel by U3 underground and near the Hofburg Palace and several top Christmas Markets.
Mozart and Strauss in unequalled excellence
The Vienna Residence Orchestra is a classical chamber orchestra with a long tradition. It was established to perform the works of the Viennese classics in supreme completion. The Rosenkavalier Hall is the perfect setting of the Palais Auersperg, where the Vienna Residence Orchestra performs with famous opera singers and ballet dancers. It is the cultural highlight on the scene of classical music!
Listen in splendid surroundings, as classical pieces from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss come to life during this 1.5-hour evening recital. Take your seat in the concert hall and settle in for one of the highlights of Vienna’s classical music calendar. Admire the talents of the performers in the Vienna Residence Orchestra, widely considered among the finest chamber orchestras in the world in the delights in one of the most beautiful of Viennese palaces in Austria.
Palais Auersperg, originally called Palais Rosenkavalier, is a Baroque palace on Auerspergstraße 1 in the Josefstadt or 8th district of Vienna. It is considered as one of Vienna’s Baroque jewels.
The Rosenkavalier Hall of the Palace is the perfect setting for this magical performance.
This beautiful building from the early 18th century continues a long musical association that dates back to the days of Mozart and beyond. Originally built in 1710, it is still a prestigious venue for balls, congresses and classical concerts, its history extending to over 230 years after new works by Mozart were played there.
PRE-THEATRE EVENING MEAL
As the restaurants are very busy at the moment and will no doubt be even busier when these classical extravaganzas are being performed, I have taken the liberty of booking tables at a nearby restaurant (DAS KAUZCHEN RESTAURANT, Das Käuzchen, Am Diamantengrund, Gardegasse 8) for a pre-theatre early evening meal at 5.30pm. As the performance starts at 8.15pm this will give us plenty of time to enjoy a relaxing authentic Austrian meal and also soak up the atmosphere of the Palace before the performance begins. Of course there is no obligation whatsoever to join us if you do not wish to. I wold rather cancel tables than not be able to book them in the first place!
The restaurant is just 2-minutes’ walk from the Volkstheater U3 underground stop and 5-minutes from the Palais Auersperg.
Out hotel, the Intercity Wien, is just 12 minutes on the U3 metro, so it would take a total of 17-20 minutes from/to the hotel and the theatre.
The Hofburg Palace and many other buildings of significant interest, plus several of the main Christmas Markets are near the theatre and restaurant. ie: Christmas Village Maria Theresian Platz; Wintergarten at Museumquartier; Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz.
