San Sebastian Festival This cruise has been perfectly timed to experience the San Sebastian Festival in Palma. Every year, San Sebastian celebrates its patron saint’s day with a huge fiesta. One of the main attractions of this occasion is the Tamborrada drum parade, which was first hosted in 1836 as part of the carnival. Legend says that the soldiers who were marching through the city daily were being mocked by the residents, but the Tamborrada parade has now grown to be a beloved yearly ritual where the drummers wear the same uniforms as the soldiers who were stationed in the city, and is an event not to be missed.

Arrival: early morning – Departure: early afternoon
The vibrant 9th-century port town of La Coruña offers a delicate combination of old and new architecture, with shimmering glass modern buildings contrasting with the deeply historical medieval district. You can immerse yourself in local life by sampling traditional Galician dishes like ‘pulpo a la gallega’, octopus with paprika and olive oil or ‘empanada gallega’, a savoury pastry filled with meat or seafood. After ascending the hillsides of Monte de San Pedro park for remarkable vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, discover rocky Costa da Morte, a rugged stretch along the coast of Galicia which tempted ships to run aground, creating a storied and legendary past. Alternatively, you may wish to explore the spiritual heart of Spain at Santiago de Compostela with its beautiful mix of Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic buildings on a Shore Excursion.

Sunday 18 January Relax at sea whilst cruising past the Rock of Gibraltar
As one of the most strategically placed natural landmarks in the world, the Rock of Gibraltar juts proudly out into the Mediterranean Sea. Used as a fortress during World War II, its natural caves and tunnels were perfect for protecting Royal Navy artillery, which you will have the chance to admire as you cruise past. Also known as a popular location for whales, dolphins, and a variety of migrating species, you’ll be ideally placed on the decks of your ship to view them in the waters around you.
Monday 19 | Tuesday 21 January Arrive Palma, Mallorca, Spain
Arrival: early afternoon – Departure: late evening
Surrounded by mountains, the Balearic island of Mallorca has seen many civilisations over the centuries, but has maintained its own traditions and culture and is distinctly Spanish today. The historic capital of Palma is home to the Gothic Santa Maria Cathedral, and adjacent to this is Almundaina, the Moorish-style Arab fortress. The Old Town has delightful narrow cobbled streets, 18th century stones walls, and has a vibrant atmosphere. Overnight in port.
Wednesday 21 January Arrive Valencia, Spain
Arrival: early morning – Departure: early evening
Synonymous with Spain, the delicious paella rice dish originated in Valencia and was originally known as arroz a la Valencia, which takes its name from the pan it is cooked in, typically large, round and shallow. Believed to have been created in the 15th century for Valencian farmers working in the rice fields using ingredients local to their surroundings; nowadays it is popular with chicken or seafood. Close by is Albufera Natural Park – an important stopover for migratory birds.
Thursday 22 January Arrive Cartegena, Spain
Arrival: early morning – Departure: late afternoon
Cartagena is often seen as one of Spain’s less well-known cities, but take a wander through its ancient streets, and you’ll discover the carefully restored Roman Amphitheatre, which once held 6,000 spectators. There will also be opportunities to marvel at modernist Art Nouveau buildings, and take the panoramic lift to the top of Concepcion Castle for remarkable views across the surrounding harbour. Immerse yourself in local life by enjoying the distinctly Spanish citrus flavours of Licor 43, or coffee-based Asiatico, made with brandy and condensed milk.
Friday 23 January Arrive Malaga, Spain
Arrival: early morning – Departure: early evening
Visiting Malaga in the winter makes for a pleasant exploration of peaceful streets lined with orange trees and historical buildings. You could explore Pablo Picasso’s birthplace and the museum dedicated to his work in Buenavista Palace, or discover the well-preserved Moorish fortress of Alcazaba, which offers beautiful panoramas over the city and the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Amidst your exploration, savour opportunities to experience local dishes of espetos (sardines on skewers and cooked over coals), tapas in authentic Spanish bard, and a traditionally sweet Moscatel wine. Alternatively, you can enjoy a hike to Gibralfaro Castle, which offers vistas of the surrounding city and a fascinating history dating back to Phoenician times.
Saturday 24 January Arrive Cadix, Portugal
Arrival: early morning – Departure: early evening
One of Europe’s oldest cities, Cadiz is well-known for the golden dome atop the cathedral, which gleams in the pleasant January sunshine. You will be perfectly placed to wander through the narrow streets of the old town or ascend the 173 steps of the former watchtower, Torre Tavira, for outstanding views across the city. There will be opportunities for you to witness a traditional Flamenco show in its place of origin and dine at authentic tapas bars, offering delectable small plates like fried anchovies, garlic prawns, and shrimp fritters, accompanied by local wines or the famously sweet and nutty-tasting Jerez sherry.
Saturday 25 January Relax at Sea whilst cruising past the Mouth of the River Tagus, Belém Tower & Discovery Monument – early morning
As your ship sails into Lisbon along the Tagus River and under the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, you can witness prominent Portuguese landmarks punctuating the skyline from the unique viewpoint of the sea. The majestic Belém Tower stands proudly at the water’s edge as a testament to the Age of Discovery, while nearby the Monument to the Discoveries commemorates the country’s explorers, Vasco de Gama and Henry the Navigator. Meanwhile, in the distance, you will also be able to see São Jorge Castle, overlooking the historic Alfama District.
Saturday 25 January Relax at Sea whilst cruising by Cristo Rei & Abril 25 Bridge – early morning
Inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer Statue, Lisbon’s Cristo Rei watches over the Tagus River and the renowned 25 de Abril Bridge, Europe’s longest suspension bridge, which closely resembles the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, both of which you can witness from the decks of your smaller sized ship as you glide past. A symbol of peace and freedom, it’s located at the highest point in the region and is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens and sculptures.
Saturday 25 January Arrive Lisbon
Arrival: early morning – Departure: late afternoon
Visiting Lisbon in January allows for opportunities to explore at a slower pace, including marvelling at views across the city from the many miradouros (viewpoints). You will also be ideally placed for wandering along the labyrinth of cobblestoned streets of Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, which offers a captivating journey through the city, from the grandeur of São Jorge Castle to the stirring rhythms of Fado music. There will also be opportunities to try local dishes like grilled sardines or the deliciously crumbly Pastéis de Nata custard tart with a crisp glass of Vinho Verde wine, ride through the city on a vintage tram, and visit the nearby fairytale-like town of Sintra, set against the backdrop of rolling hills.

It is not compulsory to attend the THREE Formal nights, but it does mean that you will be unable to eat dinner in your main restaurant that evening. Most passengers who opt-out tend to eat in the View Self-Service Restaurant or treat themselves to a meal in one of the two Speciality Restaurants, Colours & Tastes or Vasco (especially when it will also be easier to reserve a table!)

Aurora & Borealis Restaurants Borealis’ tastefully decorated and spacious two-tiered main restaurants are the focal points of dining on board. Enjoy delicious five-course, á la carte menus of expertly created dishes, prepared and cooked by the team of talented chefs and served to you by dedicated, attentive waiters. Menus include perfectly cooked steaks and seafood, freshly-made soups, pasta and salads. Plus, there are beautiful homemade breads, made overnight in our on board bakery, to enjoy too.

Solent Events has reserved tables for the early sitting at 6pm, which we find is the perfect time for enjoying the excellent onboard evening entertainment afterwards!
The Arctic Room, designed to mirror the Indian Ocean Room, the Arctic Room leads into the main Aurora Restaurant. Beautifully decorated with shades of blue and grey to reflect the nature of the Arctic, it’s adorned with Fred. Olsen’s hand-selected artwork collection by Keith Grant, and is the ideal room for intimate meals as well as hosted breakfasts and lunches with our specialist speakers.
The View Buffet Restaurant has a welcoming feel and beautiful views of the ocean provided by its large windows, and is the perfect venue for relaxed, buffet-style dining for those who feel they would prefer a more relaxed dining experience. Offering all kinds of delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner options, plus a tasty selection for the complimentary Afternoon Tea, with sandwiches, scones and tempting cakes included, all baked on board. Treats of the Region are also available in the Vista restaurant, so there’s plenty of opportunity to sample something new.
The Poolside Café provides you with the perfect al fresco dining experience to enjoy during your days on board. Enjoy a leisurely late breakfast or a selection of temptingly delicious light bites until 7pm. Depending on the weather conditions, the retractable roof will be open or closed, meaning you can dine there at any time of the year; or on selected sunny days on your cruise. Lunch may be an appetising barbecue cooked by the chefs as you relax and enjoy a ‘cocktail or mocktail of the day’ with friends, at the Lido Bar.
Colours & Tastes restaurant offers a mesmerising blend of modern Asian Fusion dishes in the colourful yet intimate restaurant, where the food provides a stimulating set of new taste experiences. The talented chefs prepare and cook a delicious selection of dishes from Japan, Thailand, China and the Phillipines, including delicately spiced grilled meats, seafood, dim sum and brightly coloured fresh stir fries; with the knowledgeable waiting team on hand to assist with anything you may need.
Vasco is a speciality Goan restaurant serving a deliciously fresh and modern take on Indian food. Named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama – the first European to reach India by sea, the menu has been inspired by the Fred. Olsen chefs from Goa, focusing on their unique culinary traditions, a place where the tastes of Europe first met the tropical warmth and spices of western India. The result is a style of food that centres on delicious sea food, spiced curries and grilled meats, all freshly cooked to authentic recipes, and served to you by the warm and attentive waiting staff.
A Complimentary Traditional Afternoon Tea is served each day in the View Restaurant, with a delicious selection of freshly baked sandwiches, scones and cakes, along with fresh tea and coffee. On selected days at sea, guests can book a Traditional Premium Afternoon Tea* experience, which you can enjoy alongside beautiful views from The Observatory’s panoramic windows, with musical accompaniment from our on board pianist and the careful attention of our white-gloved waiting team.
Room Service All suites and cabins have tea and coffee making facilities as standard, so you can enjoy a much-needed tea or coffee first thing or a relaxing drink at the end of the day. Continental breakfast can be ordered in advance for delivery at your preferred time, while snacks are available from 10am onwards.
For those times when you’d like to enjoy something more or prefer not to head to our restaurants, you can also order room service meals up until 11pm every day, selecting mouthwatering dishes from our menu of freshly prepared pizzas delivered in a box, tempting burgers and hot dogs, club sandwiches, or perhaps sweet treats such as decadent chocolate fudge cake.
On this cruise the captain will welcome you at the Captain’s Welcome Party and THREE formal nights (of course these evenings are not compulsory to attend!).
Entertainment Take a seat in Borealis’s elegant, two-tiered Neptune Lounge, and join the superb Show Company as they put on a show to remember. Guest comedians, singers and magicians, will delight and entertain you, and do join us the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell parties. During the day, the Neptune Lounge is used for our Signature Experiences, where guest speakers will share their vast knowledge delivering fascinating talks and activities, designed to give you a deeper understanding of the destinations you’ll be visiting. The Neptune Lounge is also the perfect place to attend our ‘Audience with…’sessions, where you can learn about how much work goes into the Shows, or learn about life as a ship’s Captain.
The Dress Code on Balmoral is casual by day and smart casual in ALL restaurants at night, except for the buffet restaurant, which is casual. There are TWO optional formal Black Tie nights on this cruise, when men should wear a suit or tuxedo and women, a cocktail dress, gown, pants suit or other formal attire.
A themed ‘British’ night (TBC for this cruise) is a popular addition to most sailings of more than five nights, where passengers have the option to dress in red, white and blue. Don’t forget to bring something with you!

Evening Dining for our Solent Events group is reserved on the Upper Terrace of the Main Restaurant for the early sitting at 6pm, as most of our clients prefer. We are normally on tables of 6 or 8.
IF YOU WOULD PERSONALLY PREFER to reserve a place on the LATE sitting (around 8.30pm) please state this on your booking form with the table size you require (2, 4, 6, 8).

DRINKS PACKAGE TERMS & CONDITIONS:
Minimum age: 18 to consume alcoholic drinks
The all-inclusive Drinks Package is for the sole use of those on the package and the all-inclusive cabin card must be presented each time a drink is required – without exception (it’s the same system if you ‘purchase’ a drink on your account without a package!).
Drinks within package are only available during bar/restaurant opening hours.
Only one drink per card may be ordered and this must be consumed before further drinks are requested (for obvious reasons!)
Draught products are only available in selected bars and not in the restaurants or cafés as not all the facilities have ‘pumps’.
Canned beers and ciders will be served opened for consumption.
Fred.Olsen reserves the right to refuse service to any guest deemed intoxicated and in breach of safety regulations to themselves or others.
Any infringements to the above Terms & Conditions may result in the package being withdrawn.
